The Laurels – Black Cathedral

Written by Toby Smith on June 23, 2011

Formed in Sydney’s inner-west in 2006, The Laurels share a range of visions and influences extending from sonic pioneers The Velvet Underground to the pure shoegaze bliss of My Bloody Valentine, the inner city filth of Australian legends The Saints and the trance-like psychedelia of Spacemen 3, all the way back to the lush pop harmonies of The Beatles.

After several eight hour rehearsals (mostly spent eating) they entered and eventually won the 2007 Sydney University Band Competition – a fair trade off considering the amount of money they had paid the judges. Not long after they begun their travels on the Hume Highway, cementing a loyal fan-base along the east-coast of Australia with their intense live show and sonic brilliance. The Laurels have been lucky enough to share stages alongside the likes of Tame Impala, You Am I, Cloud Control, A Place To Bury Strangers, Love Of Diagrams and Belles Will Ring to name but a few.

To date the band have released a 7″ which was launched at the Hopetoun Hotel (R.I.P) in 2009. They’re debut EP “Mesozoic” is due on July 8th!
