5 Quick Questions, with Theia

Music Feeds: Can you tell us the meaning behind your artist name?

Theia: I wanted a name that epitomised me, both sonically and aesthetically. Theia means goddess in Greek. In Greek mythology, Theia was the name of the Titaness of light, glittering and glory, which I really resonated with. It’s edgy, ethereal and represents femininity and strength which are qualities that are important to me.

MF: Where do you look for inspiration when it comes to making music?

Theia: Everywhere! My first single ‘Roam’ was written after a period of time when I’d been in and out of studio between Australia and New Zealand and, consequently, was feeling unsettled. I wrote it as a way of grounding myself. My next single, ‘Champagne Supernova’, was inspired by one of my great loves – fashion. I wrote it whilst I was reading a book about the ’90s renegades of fashion, namely Alexander McQueen, Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs and Isabella Blow. My influences and inspirations are far-reaching. Art, culture and fashion are a few.

MF: For listeners new to your music, what is one song of yours they should listen to first that best epitomises your sound?

Theia: ‘Champagne Supernova’, from my upcoming EP, is probably the song that I hold most dear. As I mentioned, it’s inspired by a couple of my favourite fashion icons, the aforementioned McQueen and Blow, but it’s also a very personal song that I wrote as a way of dealing with my inner demons. It’s an epic track that builds with lots of dreamy backing vocals and harmonies. It’s so hard for me to pick one song because they all have such a different sound – from glitter pop to R&B and slow jams. Can my answer be – listen to them all?

MF: What’s coming up for Theia this year?

Theia: I’m about to release a new single, ‘Treat You’. It’s a feel good party tune, and I hope people get into it. My debut EP will be out very soon and I can’t wait for people to hear it. I’ve also been in the studio doing some writing sessions here in Sydney and I’ll be doing the same when I’m in LA next month. I’ve got a few more projects still to be announced, which is all so exciting. Basically, 2017 is super busy and it’ll be no short of amazing.

MF: Any other fun facts you’d like fans to know?

Theia: I LOVE milkshakes. So much so, this cool cafe in Auckland, NZ, called Cereal Killa created a Theia shake. I think they might be adding it to the menu for NZ Music Month. It’s pink with candy floss on the top. Which leads me to another fun fact about myself – baby pink is my favourite colour. I also adore Hello Kitty and top of my list of places to visit is [theme park] Sanrio Puroland, in Tokyo.
