Music Feeds Podcast Episode #114: Festival Of The Sun

The 10th edition of Port Macquarieʼs Festival Of The Sun will take place this weekend, with headlining acts such as The Jezabels, Violent Soho and Shihad taking the stage at Sundowner Breakwall Tourist Park for a weekend of guaranteed summer fun.

“It’s been amazing how it’s sort of ventured on and took a bit of a life of its own really,” says Festival Director and founder Simon Luke. “That first year I sort of threw up an old stage next to the beach and the whole idea was that we’d be able surf while we listen to a few bands,” he adds.

“So many people became a part of it and sort of took ownership of it in the sense of becoming part of what it’s all about. It took a life of its own and we’re just lucky to be a part of the ride.” Festivities this year will kick off from the 12th-13th of December, and also include a Superhero themed 10th birthday bash, with prizes being awarded to the best-dressed punter on the Friday arvo before the festival kicks off.

Luke says the FOTSUN team take special care in curating a lineup each year, paying particular attention to the suggestions of other industry figures and listening to a lot of music themselves. Also on the 2014 lineup are celebrated Australian artists like Allday, Dune Rats, Jackie Onassis and The Cairos.

According to Luke, in its 10 years, FOTSUN has stayed true to its promise to watch out for the fans while also putting on an event that would make the local community proud of their town. “The most important person of this whole event is those fans. They’ve saved up their money, made the effort to get off work and put their weekend aside to come and do this thing. For us its about making sure they all feel like VIPs.”
