Music Feeds Podcast Episode #66 – Suicide Silence

American deathcore heroes Suicide Silence have survived the unthinkable, carrying on after the tragic death of frontman Mitch Lucker in 2012, forging forward with Eddie Hermida of All Shall Perish stepping up to the mic.

Guitarist Chris Garza gave our own Mike Hohnen a call from his home in Southern California to have a very open chat about what the band went through after Lucker’s death. “We never talked about continuing and we never talked about quitting, so it was like an unspoken thing, ’cause with some people, a tragic happening, the last thing you want to do is talk about it.”

Ultimately, he explains, carrying on as Suicide Silence felt like the right thing to do. “I think keeping the SS brand going and the name going keeps Mitch alive and I think it would be completely disrespectful to Mitch and everything that he worked for if we stopped going or changed the name.”

On a lighter note, the outfit are amping up for the release of album number four and preparing to head Down Under for Soundwave 2014, with the festival an obvious choice for the band. “It turned out the timing and our situation was just so, like, perfect. It was so perfect. It was meant to be Soundwave.”

He adds, “I’ve been hearing for years about Soundwave and how it’s like pretty much, if not, the best festival to play in the world. I’ve been hearing about this for years from our peer bands, just randomly, and finally… We’re not even on the festival yet and I get it!”

So what can Aussie fans expect from Suicide Silence’s live show? According to Chris, they’re at the top of their game right now. “We feel young again. We feel hungry. We’re going to play like we did when we were, like, 15. We’re just going to go out there and go fucking crazy.”
