Music Feeds Podcast Episode #97: The Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight Anthem recently unveiled their fifth full-length effort, Get Hurt, an album which frontman Brian Fallon tells Music Feeds, was never meant to “save rock and roll.” We caught up with Brian to talk about the reaction to the new album, touring Australia, and the state of US radio.

“This feels more like a real record,” says Brian. “We’re taking our fair share of kicks as well as compliments and normally people would say… ‘These guys are gonna save rock and roll, blah blah blah’, and I was like, ‘I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure we’re not gonna save rock and roll. I don’t think it’s gonna happen’. And then we wouldn’t and then they’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be the next one.'”

“But on this one they’re like, ‘Fuck you guys, you’re not saving anything. This record blows’. I’ve read some pretty funny reviews that are obviously like, ‘Fuck those guys, they suck’. And then I’ve read reviews that are actually like, ‘Whoa, that’s a pretty ballsy move to really change up the game.'”

Brian also lavished praise on Triple J, comparing it to US radio, which he describes as “like a game.” “It pisses me off,” he says. “They put us on Triple J right away… They don’t ask me to come down there and shake their hands and take their sisters out to dinner and date their whatever. But in America, you’re held hostage a lot of the time. Now, not every station does this, I wanna say…”
