Future soul artist Maya highlights the beauty that arises with strength and empowerment in the stunning visuals for her new single ‘What After Now’ which we’re stoked to be premiering here today on Music Feeds.
The lavish video is at once opulent in its glamour and calming in its stillness, featuring Maya alongside her sisters Shanni and Zali. “The video clip was inspired by my childhood love of dressing up,” explains Maya. “When I was a kid I was never happy in my own skin, so I would dress up to make myself feel like a different person.
“I asked my beautiful sisters to join me as I want to create imagery that entrances people. I want people to hear the lyrics and understand the meaning while also having fun with it. [Director] Dayne Edward found a way to capture us all looking so alike yet so different at the same time, which I thought was a beautiful metaphor for humanity.”
That sentiment shines through tenfold in the resulting clip – apt, given it’s dropping on the heels of International Women’s Day. “‘What After Now’ is the first look into my honest sound,” Maya tells Music Feeds. “I am now finally creating music that I really feel, music that I have written from a real place. My father would always tell me to get off my phone and start living in the now. We are constantly searching for more and more. This song and video represent the feeling of dealing with what you have and loving it.
“We are all so stuck in the future when really we should just relax and try to be in the now.”
