It’s times like these I wish I lived in Melbourne. I’ll go to my grave defending the merits of Sydney over our more Southern counterpart, but when they hold free events like this one, it sometimes seems like a losing battle…

From the press release:
Diafrix and friends are very excited to announce the launch of their new annual event entitled African Affair, which will celebrate the rich and diverse African culture.

The free community festival hosted by Fuzzy from Video Hits – will be launched on Sunday 28th February at Footscray Community Arts Centre. Primarily based around a music concert featuring some of the country’s most amazing artists of African descent (Diafrix, Lo-Tek, Mike Justice, 1/6, DJ Kay-Z and more), the afternoon fiesta will also have football workshops run by Collingwood Football Club’s own Harry O’Brien, as well as offering authentic African cuisine.

The event is the brainchild of an ever-strengthening bond between local hip hop band Diafrix and young Collingwood football superstar Harry O’Brien. O’Brien – the first ever player of African descent in the AFL – is one of the most prolific supporters of the duo, both of whom are African immigrants. The trio has found a mutual passion for community projects and are regularly involved in a multitude of hands-on community roles, while being ambassadors for Make Poverty History and the Burnet Institute.

This continues Melbourne’s celebrated vein of multicultural festivals which includes Lygon Street Festa, Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival and Johnston Street Spanish Fiesta, amongst a host of others. Africa being the world’s second most populated continent, and one that has an increasing influence on Melbourne’s diverse culture, it is time to celebrate our city’s extraordinary ethnic landscape.

SUNDAY 28th FEBRUARY
2.00pm – 7.00pm
THE AMPHITHEATRE
Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street, Footscray

FREE ENTRY – BYO PICNIC

Diafrix’s Concrete Jungle is out now. Check their myspace for more details.

Well it’s almost that time of the year again. Sure, there’s that whole Christmas thing coming up (as I’m sure you’ll be aware from the obscene amount of advertising already flooding your senses day in, day out), but for lovers of music late December really means something completely different.

It’s really the time of year where any self respecting music fan gets ready to head to the hills of the Glenworth Valley for Peats Ridge Sustainable Music & Arts Festival. With over 200 artists across ten stages it’s set to be a HUGE one in 2009!

The lovely people organising the festival are offering you, the lucky readers of Music Feeds a chance to win a free 3 Day festival pass for you and a friend, including camping as well as the chance to meet and hang out with local hip hop gurus Diafrix.

How amazing is that?! All you have to do to enter is email competitions@musicfeeds.com.au with the subject line ‘I want to hang out with Diafrix at Peats Ridge’ before December 5th. Easy, right?

Excitement is already building for Daniel Merriweather’s forthcoming tour, and now two of Australia’s finest hip hop acts – Phrase and Diafrix – will be joining the tour.

Already spawning triple j favourites ‘Skylight’ and ‘Clockwork’, the album reached the lofty heights #26 on the ARIA chart, cementing Phrase’s place as one of Australia’s brightest talents.

Since December 1979 Melbourne Community Radio station PBS 106.7FM has been the ‘home of little-heard music’. Thirty years of broadcasting has seen many musical fashions come and go, but one thing remains constant is PBS and its dedication to live music.

PBS 106.7FM will be serving up a whole week of live music across their programming from 7th December until 13th December – with it all officially kicking off at the PBS 106.7FM Live Music Week Launch taking place on Sunday 6th December at The Corner Hotel, Richmond. Gracing the stage will be Warped; Kylie Auldist; Diafrix; Polo Club; Geoff Achison; Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir; Richi Madan and his Bollywood Dancers; and The PBS Jazz Allstars featuring Paul Williamson with the whole day being broadcast LIVE on 106.7FM.

Whether it’s jazz, folk, blues, rock, punk, country, and so much more, PBS 106.7FM has maintained its ethos of being a home for music that doesn’t get recognition anywhere else. Quite often this music is delivered direct into your lives – your homes, cars, and workplaces, in the form of artists playing live from the Easey Street PBS 106.7FM studios. During Live Music Week there will be an outstanding number of bands – over 60, doing exactly that. Stay tuned for more announcements.

A massive collection of both local and international artists have passed through the doors at PBS 106.7FM in the last 30 years. It is this dedication to live music that means that even in today’s digital era PBS 106.7FM still plays as much of a crucial role in people’s musical education as it did when everyone ‘gathered round the wireless’.

Celebrating the rich diversity of musical offerings that the station offers to their audience 24/7 year round, Live Music Week encapsulates PBS 106.7FM’s dedication to live music. Make sure you are a part of it and come down to The Corner Hotel on Sunday 6th of December for the PBS Live Music Week Launch, and tune into PBS 106.7FM during Live Music Week.
