Feeds: Radiohead

According to a blog post from L.A. Times writer Jai-Rui Cook, Radiohead hosted a ‘wrap party’ after a three week recording session in L.A. reportedly held at Nigel Godrich’s (long time Radiohead producer or ‘the sixth member’ to some) home in the Hollywood Hills on the 30th of January.

While this could all just be a lie, the band were in L.A. in late January, performing a benefit concert for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, and there is this little snippet we got via NME:

“Bryan [Cook, engineer] helped transform a house in the Hollywood Hills into a recording studio and spent the last three weeks there recording Radiohead with Nigel Godrich. On Saturday, we waded through a driveway full of Priuses and Minis to get to the wrap party.

I was giddy seeing Beck, Salma Hayek and Danger Mouse chatting around the same pool where Dean Martin and the Rat Pack used to hang out. Thom Yorke periodically toyed with the iPhone that controlled the speakers. Usually he skipped forward to a Rolling Stones song.

… The band wanted to record in LA to get away from the dismal English winter. Nigel said they were probably lolling about too much in the sunshine when they first arrived. When it started pouring down, they realised someone up there was telling them to get on with it. If their last album was In Rainbows, I guess they could call this one In Rainstorms.”

Anyway like I said this might just all be gossip, but with Thom Yorke ???? scheduled to play Coachella later this year, I can’t help but wonder.

(By the way, that’s not a typo. Promotional materials for Thom Yorke’s upcoming solo performances have been deliberately labelled with four question marks after his name. As to why, we’re not exactly sure… – Ed.)

Radiohead have officially released a new track called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’.

Last week Dan reported the leak of a new or previously unreleased Radiohead track called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’. Included with the leaked file was a strange poem that lead to some speculation it could be the single from a new EP due for release yesterday (17th August). Today Radiohead announced it as a new single.

Oh well, no new EP. It’s still a pretty cool track anyway!

The track is available as a free download from the band’s W.A.S.T.E. shop with artwork.

No EP, just a single release! Still pretty cool anyway——

Last week we reported on the possible leak of a new Radiohead song. It seems now that the song, These Are My Twisted Words, might be the lead single from a new Radiohead EP, due for release some time this week.

The Guardian reports that the nature of the initial release has had Internet sleuths scrambling for further information:

“Here is what is known: These Are My Twisted Words first appeared via the filesharing website What.cd.

The file was called “01 radiohead these are my twisted words (advance) 2009 woi.mp3″. It was the first post from a user called “crza”, offering an MP3 and “info” file, typical of pirated music leaks. crza has been a member of What.cd for just under a year and a half. His previously downloads include Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, Eddie Kendricks’s People … Hold On, and plug-ins for the post-production software Shake. crza changed his privacy settings shortly before uploading the song, making it hard to learn more about him.

The “info” file is just text, formatted to contain a picture. You can view it here. Like most info files, crza’s version includes technical information on the song – its length, file size and quality. Unlike most info files, it also includes an inscrutable poem.

The poem reads as follows:

i just wanted to reassure readers

that following representations

seeking confirmation

that before your very eyes

behind the wall of ice

that the box is not under threat

however they are set to remove

other boxes

in fact i have the list in front of me

i went to a briefing on their plans

and challenged them to tell me

exactly what the cost would be

they spoke in broad terms

The info file – and the song’s original filename – have references to a mysterious “Wall of Ice” or “WOI”. Though this could be the name of a release group that stole and leaked the track, no group with that name seems to have acted before. Some Radiohead fans have suggested that Wall of Ice is the name of a forthcoming Radiohead EP – possibly due on 17 August, the “release date” listed in the info file. They point to Thom Yorke’s recent interview with The Believer magazine, where besides criticising CDs and proposing that Radiohead forego the album format, Yorke also said that the band had a “good plan” for releasing new singles and EPs. “We’ve got this great idea for putting things out,” he said, “but I can’t tell you what it is, because someone will rip it off.”

If we are to see a new release today Music Feeds hasn’t heard about it yet, but due to the time difference with our Northern neighbours we’re still optimistic we might hear something later on. Stay tuned…

Following up on last week’s release of a new Radiohead song honouring the memory of the last active combat World War I veteran, this site has released details on another possible new track.

Entitled “These Are My Twisted Words”, the track was posted on a prominent Radiohead fan site yesterday morning with little information as to where or when it came from. Having had a quick listen, it definitely sounds like Yorke signing, and the rough, unpolished feel to the layered instrumental tracks would seem to suggest that it’s a studio leak.

(The more astute listeners will also hear a tape reel winding up at the beginning of the track. These are normally associated with analog tape recordings that haven’t been properly edited yet… a clue, or clever hoax?)

As for now, no one knows and Radiohead’s official channels are keeping tight-lipped.Anyway, have a listen below and let us know what you think.

Feeds: Radiohead

The new song is a tribute to the memory of Harry Patch, the last surviving World War I combat soldier, who died at age 111 on July 25. Apparently, Thom Yorke was so moved by an interview with the veteran from 2005 that he decided to pay him homage in song.

Not the most exciting of tracks, but it’s well intentioned. The song can downloaded from the Radiohead website, with all profits going to the Royal British Legion.

Feeds: Radiohead

It would seem that the Oxford 5 piece have once again tired of life out of the studio, heading in once again with long time producer Nigel Godrich to work on their follow up to In Rainbows.

“It was very noisy and chaotic and really fun,” bassist Colin Greenwood told the English media. “And I’m very impressed and grateful for Nigel our producer and his ability to make it all sound vaguely plausible,” he added.

“It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking what’s next?”

With In Rainbows’ now famous ‘pay what you think’ release, expectations are high as to what Radiohead will do with the next album.

“We were just saying to people how much do you think we’re worth?” Colin said. “It’s like a long term relationship and it was great because it kicked off lots of debate about it.”

The greater question to me though is what musical direction the band will take. With much of In Rainbows having been unreleased b-sides and singles that didn’t make it on previous album, the new album will the see the band once again starting from scratch.

With no label to speak of the band will have the most creative freedom of their career so far in making this album so let’s hope they deliver.

Also please don’t forget to contact the band and badger them about an Australian tour this time.
