Dune Rats, Neverland Bar Coolangatta – 17/05/2012

Brisbane two-piece surf-thrash band Dune Rats found themselves on the sands of Coolangatta to kick off their headline tour last night. Fuck It, the name of their new single, inspired them to pack up the bong and hit the road around the country. Danny and BC, the support kings of low-fi rock called in The Vines bassist Brad Heald for some funky provision to their national tour.

After a flurry of loud support bands, including fellow Brisbane unearthed band Gung-Ho, the audience was pumped for the Dune Rats to hit the floor. Jumping straight into Colour TV, it was obvious they were here to par-tay, provoking the crowd to get amongst it. Despite some obvious technical difficulties, the boys played on true to their style, pulling out favorite songs like I’m Gonna Get So High and Woo. They managed to pull it all together just in time for their new single Fuck It, which sent the crowd into a feeding frenzy.

A sea of long hair flowed all over Neverland as they ooed and ahhed their way through their set. In fact, there was no line between band equipment and audience as people beat about, and to be honest, no one really gave a flying dune rat. This was a throw-down kind of backyard party.

Their iconic surf sound sold as they began to play Pogo. Drummer, BC, lost the microphone halfway though the track as they played it out. After expressing their apologies and frustration to the crowd, the problem was resolved and the lads from Brisbane went on to do a Pogo-matic encore of their hit song, which didn’t leave anyone disappointed. The show climaxed with the same high energy it started with, leaving the audience a little bit sweaty, with some dirty, poppy tunes in their heads for the ride home.
