This Is Happening: Endtroducing the Shadowsphere

As a master of scratching and mixing, on top of being attributed as the founder of the “trip hop” genre, it almost seems irresponsible to leave DJ Shadow out of this blog.  Not necessarily for his musical talents that have spanned nearly two decades but for the evolution that made it possible.

Welcome to the Shadowsphere.

It sounds like semi-thrilling rollercoaster at Movie World but in reality, it is a whirlwind of music and video that is sure to rock your socks clean off. I mentioned the use of projection mapping in my previous post (Beyond Monday, Beyond the Decks) on The Glitch Mob. It is phenomenal to see a band expand their visual experience using that technology. Tragically, The Glitch Mob have yet to take the full experience seen in their Beyond Monday music video to the stage.

Thankfully we have the likes of DJ Shadow has and to those who managed to catch his Splendour in the Grass sideshows, know that it is a mind bending brilliant show. Most people who attended Splendour in the Grass however chose to see the master of auto-tune, Kanye West (though I’m told it was still a fun show).  But while Weezy touched the sky on the main stage, a select few stuck round for the Shadowsphere and not once have I looked back in regret.

Describing it really doesn’t do it justice so I’ll keep it simple. DJ Shadow has a full set up inside a rotating white sphere (the rotation simply allows him to face the open side to the crowd and interact face to very far away face). The sphere and the screen behind it are then mapped by multiple projectors, taking you on one hell of a ride.
