78 Saab Have Called It Quits

Canberran rock veterans 78 Saab have decided to call it a day after 15 years of touring and recording together. The announcement came via the band’s website after a career that saw the longstanding four-piece release four studio albums, with their last, Good Fortune, coming in 2010 and playing well over 300 shows.

Although the band formed in Canberra in 1995, it was Sydney that became the quartet’s adopted hometown, and thus the recently vandalised Annandale Hotel – a place the band describes as their spiritual home – will be the venue of choice for 78 Saab’s final gig. The concert will take place on Saturday, Decemeber 1 with tickets on sale now via Annandale Hotel’s website.

To coincide with the retirement of 78 Saab, the band will finally be making their entire back catalogue available for digital purchase. This means that the band’s debut record, 2000’s Picture a Hum, Can’t Hear a Sound, and their EPs Eastwards by Removal and Hello Believers will be available for purchase via iTunes for the first time ever.

After 15 years, 350 shows and less than a million album sales, 78 Saab are calling it a day.

They can blame no one but themselves for either their longevity or their demise and they will commemorate the moment with one very special last show at their spiritual home, The Annandale Hotel, on December 1.

Over their career 78 Saab have earned a reputation as a band that have delivered both live and in the studio without fail. Strongly committed to their craft, they have always played and written for their sheer love of rock and roll and the friendships that have been created and sustained over their life as a band.

It is a rare thing when a combination of chemistry and talent combines in such a way to create an entity such as Saab and anyone who has seen them live can attest to their ability to teleport the listener out of the room via their imagination and the physical power of their unique guitar-driven rock and roll.

Don’t miss 78 Saab as they motor away…
