A Tribe Called Red Announce First Ever Australian Tour

Canada’s A Tribe Called Red have just announced they will be touring Australia for the first time.

Playing an extensive run of shows down the east-coast as well appearing at Australian Music Week and The Sydney Opera House’s Homeground, the JUNO award winning indigenous Canadian Producer/DJ crew are sure to offer an interesting insight into our own treatment and understanding of our own Indigenous cultures and peoples.

Using video segments taken from pop culture texts such as movies and cartoons to poke fun and highlight how racist much of the imagery is, A Tribe Called Red are a unique presence in the music industry. Blending instrumental hip-hop, reggae, electronic music and elements of First Nations traditional drumming and chanting, with a dancer mixing b-boy styles with traditional hoop dancing, the group look to their heritage to inform their art.

As nations the world over continue to overlook and dismiss the plight of their indigenous peoples, what could be more relevant than artists seeking to create discussion around those cultures and the way our media often misrepresents them.

With their self-titled album released back in March 2012, the group have been snapping awards and accolades left right and centre, the album being long-listed for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize and included in the Washington Post’s top 10 albums of the year.

Formed back in 2010, the crew is currently made up DJ NDN, Bear Witness and 2oolman and have been touring the globe performing at festivals such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Made in America, Electric Forest, Osheaga, Squamish, Global Fest, AfroPunk Fest, Mad Decent Block Party, Jazz Fests (Montreal, New-Orleans, Winnipeg, Halifax, Saskatoon), TIFF, Shambala, Transmusicales de Rennes, The Great Escape and many more.

Their live show, tempered by the heavy slog of touring, has been winning over audiences and critics alike, with outlets such as Exclaim describing it “as an audio-visual, cultural phenomenon”.
