Alex Lahey Wants You To Stop Comparing Her To Courtney Barnett Because It’s Lazy & Kinda Sexist

Alex Lahey is jack of all your Courtney Barnett comparisons, OK?

The 24-year-old’s star is well and truly on the shoot following her widely buzzed-about performances at this year’s Splendour In The Grass and BIGSOUND festivals, plus now-daily rotation on triple j.

And her fuzz guitar-fuelled, Aussie accent-tinged brand of wry, observational indie rock has naturally invited plenty of comparisons to another Melbourne-based brunette singer-songwriter by the name of Courtney Barnett.

“We’re both Australian women with brown hair who play Telecasters,” Lahey tells Yahoo in an interview.

But she also reckons those comparisons are lazy and sexist.

“I’m just not convinced that those comparisons would be happening if I was a guy. It’s just silly and easy,” Lahey adds to AAP. “I think it’s easy to lump girls in with each other and it’s just stupid.”

But just because she’s frustrated at being constantly likened to C-Barn doesn’t mean she doesn’t admire and respect the earth-conquering Milk! records muso.

“I’m a huge fan of Courtney I think she’s one of the best songwriters in the world and her values and what she stands for are beautiful and brilliant, so I’m humbled to be compared to that,” Lahey says. “But I don’t think that it’s accurate, especially from a musical perspective, we play very different types of music.”

“But if I have half the career Courtney has now I will be very, very happy.”

Catch Alex Lahey live on her B-Grade University Tour of Australia throughout September and October.
