ALT-J (∆) Take Away UK’s Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize

The band everyone is talking about, alt-J have been bestowed with one of the UK’s most sought-after accolades. Taking away the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize on account of their mind-blowing 2012 album An Awesome Wave.

The award honours those who have faired well in the Album of the Year category. Artists from England and Ireland are eligible for the prize, being judged solely on the recorded work found on the album released that year.

The weight of the situation was not lost on the band, who bolted to Facebook to inform fans that “We bloody won the Mercury!!!” The talent of the group is clearly not lost on Aussie fans, who snapped up every ticket available to their recent and inaugural Australian tour.

Alt-J is still yet to reach its cruising altitude. With more hype about the band kicking up every day, the recent single Breezeblocks still continues to kick ass via radio, and An Awesome Wave hit broke into the top 10 on the Australian iTunes Album Charts and #44 on the ARIA charts just last week.

If all this suddenly has you regretting missing their last run of shows, fear not. They will be returning to our shores for Laneway Festival next year.
