Aussie DJs To Revolutionise School Discos With ‘Playground Sounds’ Concert Series

In the coolest thing to hit Aussie schools since the Sunnyboy iceblock (RIP), a brand new concert series dubbed Playground Sounds is coming to change the way we all think about the humble school disco.

Gone are the days of doing The Macarena while your PE teacher spins tunes over the assembly speakers. Lucky kids across the nation are about to get treated to exclusive DJ sets from some truly huge Aussie and international names, who’ll be hitting the decks at select schoolyards throughout the summer.

Jake Stone (Bluejuice), Just a Gent, KLP, The Aston Shuffle and — wait for it — Zia from The Dandy Warhols have all put their hand up to go back to school from this month onwards as part of the one-of-a-kind silent disco for students.

But the unique mini-festival experience is more than just a way to make mums, dads and older siblings jealous, it’s also part of a new health and wellbeing program that encourages kids to exercise.

A wireless heart rate monitor around each students’ wrist will be used to track & record their activity and provide real time updates on the intensity of their D-floor workout.

Playground Sounds CEO Greg Mathew explains more: “Not only does the Playground Sounds introduce them to new music but it combines the two [music & exercise] in a fun environment where we can educate students on a number of important issues and allow the school to work together to unlock some cool prizes, measured by our wearable devices,” he says.

And the allstar DJ lineup won’t just be popping by Aussie playgrounds to spin tunes, they’ll also be on hand to give kids insights into the music industry through Q&A sessions, alongside founders of labels like I OH YOU and leading music industry bodies like Purple Sneakers.

Rego is now open for schools who want to take part via the Playground Sounds website, and to cap it all off, “the school that moves the most” is in line to win their very own music festival in 2017.

Most of us would have traded a week’s worth of tuckshop money for something this cool when we were in school, so for the love of god, cherish it.
