This Aussie Metal Band’s Confidence Man Cover Is Brutal

Aussie metal band Toxicon have covered Confidence Man‘s ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’ as a way of rebutting triple j‘s claim that the Australian group are this country’s “best up and coming live band”.

Momentarily renaming themselves Toxiconfidence Man, they have turned the perky pop song into a raucous, furious metal song that is almost incomparable to the original.

Originally when triple j made the claim about Confidence Man there was plenty of backlash and it seems Toxicon were one of those who opposed the claim.

Frontman Wayne Clarris issued a statement to Music Feeds about how the cover came to be saying that originally they felt there must be more to Confidence Man than meets the eye.

“Maybe it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but but surely there must be something to this song, some hidden depth,” he wrote but concluded, “Alas there was not.”

“During the drive home from an interstate show the boys and I had a listen and let’s just say, yeah nah. That’s a pretty shit call on triple j‘s behalf.”

He said that they decided to see if they could, “rework it from the inside out,” but it all ended up being, “a bit of a piss take.”

They’re even considering starting a Go Fund Me page to raise just $50 for a video of the cover.

You can read Clarris’ full statement below and also listen to the cover.

If you’d like to make your own decision on triple j‘s claim then Confidence Man just announced a national tour today off the back of their new single ‘Better Sit Down Boy’.

Wayne Clarris’ statement to Music Feeds:

Recently there was quite the upset over triple j’s call on the “Best up and coming live band” with their song ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’.

Maybe it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but but surely there must be something to this song, some hidden depth? Alas, there was not.

During the drive home from an interstate show the boys and I had a listen and let’s just say, yeah nah. That’s a pretty shit call on triple j’s behalf.

Something has to be done. We decided to do a cover version of ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’. Get into this three dimensional masterpiece and rework it from the inside out.

We genuinely wanted to stay true to the song and just splash a bit of heavy over it, see if it could be improved but it all ended up being a bit of a piss take.

You know the old saying, you can’t polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter.

We actually ended up having some fun toward the end of the song but by that point had pretty much abandoned the original work of art.

What’s next you may ask?

Well we are thinking of running a GoFundMe to do a matching music video for ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’. We’ll set the limit to $50, that should be enough.
