Big Day Out To Stay in New Zealand, But Venue Will Change

There were questions last week about the future of Big Day Out in New Zealand, after traditional venue Mt Smart Stadium was ruled out for next year’s event. Festival promoter Andrew McManus spoke to TVNZ saying that with the costs of running the festival being around 150% higher in NZ compared to Australia, along with the time constraints of trying to find a new venue, could mean the festival’s lifespan in the country would be limited.

However, CRS management (the festival organisers) said in a statement over the weekend that “Leaving New Zealand or Auckland is the last thing Big Day Out wants to do and we are in continuing discussions with venue operators to ensure the event stays there into the future. Audience members should be confident that the BDO will return in January 2012.”.

Losing Big Day Out in New Zealand would be a massive blow to the NZ music scene, giving NZ talent the opportunity to play on a big stage along side international artists.
