UPDATE 02/09/14: The Black Keys have announced a massive Australian headline tour!

The Black Keys are planning their return to Australia sometime in 2015 despite their decision to scale back their touring efforts, the duo have revealed. The American bluesy rock duo opened up about their plans in a recent interview about their forthcoming eighth studio album Turn Blue, due out later this week.

“We’re not going to do quite as much touring,” frontman Dan Auerbach told The Australian. “We’re still going to work our asses off. That’s just who we are, but we’re not going to work that many dates in a row … That was overkill. After a while that becomes counterproductive.”

While the band didn’t give any specifics away about the tour, The Australian notes that the band is “planning a return early next year.” Auerbach also reflected on their previous relentless touring schedule, which prompted them in 2011, on the back of their album Brothers, to cancel shows in Australia and elsewhere citing exhaustion.

“We’ve been successful in different parts of the world and we could spend our whole lives just touring,” Auerbach explains. “We could do extensive tours of Australia, Asia and all of Europe and all of South and North America. It’s hard to say no to that. We’re working-class people. We’re from a place where if you’re given the opportunity to make money you go do it. It’s not like we have a back-up plan or a college degree or anything. That’s all we’ve done.”

In the interview, Auerbach also opens up about how his recent divorce and gaining custody of his six-year-old daughter Sadie influenced the new record, his own role as producer on Dr John’s 2012 album Locked Down and Lana Del Rey‘s upcoming record Ultraviolence, plus recording with producer and co-writer Danger Mouse on Turn Blue.

“We didn’t have a plan going into the recording session. We had a blank slate and started making it up. We don’t really do demos. We like to see it unfold rather than forcing it,” Auerbach says. “We all have an equal say when we’re in there. We throw ideas out and see what sticks.”

Turn Blue will be The Black Keys’ follow up to 2011’s El Camino, also co-produced by Danger Mouse and which spawned the international hit song Lonely Boy. Ahead of the new album’s release on Friday, May 9th, The Black Keys have released the clip for single Fever, which sees the duo sweating over a pretty hilarious prank pulled on their very own label.
