Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke Unveils New Solo Track ‘Yemaya’

Kele Okereke has just released his first new solo music since his 2014 album Trick in the form of a single titled ‘Yemaya’.

It’s a much more understated and chilled effort from the Bloc Party frontman than what we’ve become used to, and in a statement Kele explained that the inspiration for the song came from the decision to have his first child.

“In the west African Yoruba religion, Yemaya is the mother goddess of the ocean, she is kinda the patron saint of pregnant women and fertility,” explains Kele. “When I knew we were having a baby she started to be appear in my thoughts and dreams a fair bit.”

The track is also the first time that Okereke has chosen to release music under his full name, with his previous album’s released under the mononym ‘Kele’.

Okereke is set to head out on a short run of European tour dates soon, however it is not yet known whether this single will be the first track from a new project or just act as a stand-alone single.
