Call Papa Vs Pretty For A Good Time (And Their New Single)

In a rather novel and analogue way to get music straight to the ears of fans, Sydney’s Papa Vs Pretty have unveiled their new track Smother via a special telephone hotline, ahead of its release this Friday.

Upon calling the Smother Hotline (1300-552-550) a rather seriously toned voice invites fans to listen to the new single in full and afterwards to “perhaps leave us a message on our voice recording box.” Smother is the second single to be taken from Papa vs Pretty’s forthcoming sophomore album White Deer Park, due for release in February, 2014.

This is not the first time a band has used a dial-up hotline to reach fans with their music. Alt-rockers They Might Be Giants operated a dial-a-song service for over 20 years, where anyone could call a Brooklyn phone line and be directed to an answering machine that (if functioning) played an exclusive TMBG song, often changed daily.

A few years ago, two guys from a San Fransisco-based communications company Twilio, created a Hall & Oates emergency hotline, named Callin’ Oates. Fans could call in and were given the option of listening to H&O classics One on One, Rich Girl, Maneater or Private Eyes, at the touch of a button.

The fun for Papa Vs Pretty fans doesn’t stop at the dial tone. To complete the experience the band have also have also dropped a teaser video, plus they’ve announced they’ll head to the coast for a special run of tour dates, including some all-ages shows in Sutherland and Newcastle, to give fans a taste of what to expect from White Deer Park.

So go get dialling and, as the voice recording commands, “Hold onto your handset, sit back and enjoy it, man.”
