Cop Retires Over Guns N’ Roses Member’s Wedding Proposal

Two members of the Las Vegas Police Department who gave Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba a private helicopter tour of the city so that he could propose to his girlfriend have been found to be in breach of department policy, with one captain opting to retire in lieu of a demotion to lieutenant.

As Billboard reports, Capt. David O’Leary, who was a 25-year veteran of the force and oversaw the Financial Crimes Bureau, retired on 20th December after being faced with a demotion for his involvement in Ashba’s elaborate proosal to then-girlfriend, Colombian actress Nathalia Henao.

The pilot of the helicopter, Officer Ray Horsley, will be transferred out of the Air Support Detail as of 11th January and will no longer be allowed to fly for the department, according to police officials. The disciplinary actions follow a four-month-long investigation by the department.

The department was first alerted to the private and unauthorised aerial tour by Ashba himself, who posted a photo to his Instagram account, depicting himself and Henao wearing helicopter headgear, and thanking the Las Vegas police department for “the most amazing” private tour of Sin City.

The guitarist said the fly-along concluded in a field at police headquarters where he proposed to his current wife amongst roses and “a bottle of the bubble stuff.” In the post, Ashba described the moment as being “magical” and thanked “our good friends for helping making it all happen!!”

“A fly along and a patrol ride along are typically done for the purpose of exposing members of the community to the duties of law enforcement,” the department said. “A fly along would begin and terminate at Air Support and would not include any off site landings as occurred in this case.”
