Doctor Who Actor Matt Smith To Star In American Psycho Musical

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will play the lead role of Patrick Bateman in the upcoming Broadway production of American Psycho: The Musical. Smith will make his final appearance as the 11th Doctor in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special.

The play will be based on Bret Easton Ellis‘ 1991 novel of the same name, in which protagonist Patrick Bateman chronicles the hollowness and isolation of his daily existence as a Wall Street executive by day and depraved serial killer by night.

The character was portrayed most famously by Christian Bale in Mary Harron‘s 2000 film adaptation of the novel. Other actors to take on the role in film include Casper Van Dien, Michael Kremko, and Dechen Thurman.

Smith will be the first to portray the character on stage, in a production funded by a Kickstarter campaign. The team managed to raise $150,000 in just 30 days, unsurprising when considering the book, film, and indeed character’s massive cult following.

Both the book and film possess a strong association with music, particularly that of Phil Collins, Whitney Houston, and most famously Huey Lewis and the News, and fans are hoping to hear all appear in the musical.

The show has been adapted from Ellis’ novel by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), with music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik.
