After leaving a two-year hole in Melbourne’s live music landscape, The Espy will return with its first live music event since shutting down for renovations in mid-2015.
Going down in the St Kilda watering hole’s iconic Gershwin Room, the historic event will be headlined by the infamous and legendary Aussie punk rock band X, with support from The Heartache State and Spiderbait‘s DJ Whitt behind the decks.
“It’s a new lease of life for St Kilda’s most iconic pub,” organisers write in the official Facebook event description. “The old girl is in great hands and this is your chance to relive your fond memories and have a glimpse of the future. Join us in the Gershwin Room for this very limited event for the St Kilda Art Crawl.”
With the big event set to go down this Saturday, September 23rd, it seems the venue’s new operators have made good on their pledge to reopen for live music next year a little earlier than expected.
It’ll be interesting to see whether the venue will continue to host regular live music events going forward following this weekend’s big relaunch, and Music Feeds has contacted The Espy for comment.
It follows a two-year saga of planning objections, renovation approval and refurbishments that also saw the venue change ownership, all while its doors remained firmly closed.
Let’s hope this Saturday marks the dawn of a new era for the live music landmark.
