Ex-AC/DC & Rose Tattoo Bassist Neil Smith Passes Away, Aged 60

After a battle with cancer, Neil Smith, whose name is associated with 2 of Australia’s most iconic rock bands – AC/DC and Rose Tattoo – has passed away. Smith’s family announced the news on the musician’s official Facebook page this weekend.

Smith enjoyed a stint with Acca Dacca back in 1974, but jumped ship prior to the release of their 1975 album High Voltage. The position was filled by a number of other bassists before long-standing member Cliff Williams rose to the occasion. Smith was also a member of Rose Tattoo during 1979.

“Neil Smith passed away in the early hours of the morning, Sunday the 7th of April 2013,” the statement said. “He was sleeping peacefully and surrounded by family. Neil is now in peace and is no longer battling with cancer. There is not a person out there who has met him and not felt like their lives were better for the experience. He was a loving and devoted father, a loyal friend and all round generous person. He was larger than life, and his passing will be felt. Thanks to all his friends for their support and love, especially during the final stages of his life.”
