EXCLUSIVE: Stream Conor Oberst’s New Album ‘Upside Down Mountain’

Bright EyesConor Oberst is on the cusp of releasing his new solo album, Upside Down Mountain, which follows the prolific singer-songwriter’s signing to Nonesuch Records. And for fans champing at the bit to get their ears on our hero’s fine new tunes, we’re streaming it exclusively right here on Music Feeds.

The record, which features vocal contributions from First Aid Kit, was recorded in Nashville’s Blackbird studios with producer Jonathan Wilson, who’s previously worked with Father John Misty.

Upside Down Mountain sees a welcome return to more a personal songwriting approach from Oberst, recalling his golden hours performing as Bright Eyes. “It’s more intimate or personal, if you will. Even it all my songs come from the same place, you make different aesthetic decisions along the way. For me, language is a huge part of why I make music,” he explains.

“I’m not the greatest guitar player or piano player — I’m not the greatest singer, either — but I feel if I can come up with melodies I like that are fused with poetry I’m proud of, then that’s what I bring to the table. That’s why I’m able to do this.”

Oberst was slated to make a return to Australia as part of Soundwave Festival 2014 this year, with his post-hardcore outfit Desaparecidos, but dropped out due the ill health of a close family member.

Upside Down Mountain is available for pre-order in physical form right now, and digital pre-orders will receive tracks Hundreds of Ways and Governor’s Ball immediately. The album is released in Australia next Friday, 16th May.
