Exclusive Stream: Jinja Safari New Track ‘Toothless Grin’

Sydney’s dynamic folk pop outfit Jinja Safari have returned. After stealing all of our attention on their first national tour back in 2010 with Art Vs. Science, the duo have successfully navigated their own path, and today have offered Music Feeds readers an exclusive stream of their latest track Toothless Grin before anyone else!

The release coincides with a series of tour dates the band will be embarking on with Opossom and White Arrows. Half of the duet, Marcus Azon, explained the charming and strongly relatable story behind the song:

‘Toothless Grin’ started really as a question to myself. I had started seeing a girl that I had liked for a long time, and it was a pretty shaky, tectonic experience. Maybe we would be perfect for each other at a different time of our lives, but at that point we were barking up different trees. She went to Thailand to figure out some personal stuff and wrote me a couple of letters.

She said she wanted to live like a hermit, away from the Western world, exploring old temples, and broken paths, laughing and smoking till she was old and toothless, and not worrying about climbing a social ladder… And I thought to myself, “Man, that’s what I want… I could join her, that sounds perfect…why would I stay, trade money for my days…what I can’t find here, I’ll forget over there…”

I think there is a small part in all of us that would be happy to throw it all away and wind the evolutionary clock back a few thousand years, strip off the ‘general pants’ and other trendy vintage clothes, throw away the smart phone and the desire for the latest upgrade and update, find a mud hut, a small patch of land, laugh, sing, dance, tell stories, hunt for our food, respect our elders and the spirit of the land, and live a less-cluttered life.

We live for now and sacrifice love, happiness and minutes of our life for the sake of fitting into our ever-evolving complicated society; for the sake of expectation; for the sake of ego; for the sake of being ‘remembered’; for the sake of fitting into a new pair of jeans, however snug they may be – it is not an option at all.
