Flume & King Gizzard Win Big At Independent Music Awards

The Carlton Dry Independent Music Award winners were announced last night and cleaning up big was Australia’s crown prince of EDM, Flume, taking home four awards including the coveted Best Independent Artist Award.

The awards were held at Revolt Art Space in Kensington, Melbourne, and featured performances by Archie Roach, Violent Soho, Saskwatch and nominees Big Scary, Seth Sentry and RÜFÜS, and while Vance Joy and Melburnian garage rockers King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard also had multiple wins, Flume was the star of the evening.

As well as Best Artist, the 21-year-old known to his mum as Harley Streten took home Best Independent Album and Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album for his self-titled debut and Best Independent Dance/Electronica or Club Single for his smash single Holdin’ On.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard won Best Independent Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk Album for their debut long play 12 Bar Bruise. The 7-piece also won the inaugural Carlton Dry Global Music Grant, receiving $50,000 to help establish themselves as independent artists overseas.

Melburnian up-and-comer Vance Joy was named Breakthrough Independent Artist and was awarded Best Independent Single/EP for his release God Loves You When You’re Dancing.

Other winners in the eighth year of the awards were Seth Sentry for Best Independent Hip Hop Album, Paul Kelly for Best Independent Blues and Roots Album and Catherine Britt for Best Independent Country Album.
