A hologram of late heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio made its live debut at Germany’s Wacken Open Air Festival earlier this week, and now footage of the hologram in action has emerged online.
Dio’s hologram, which joined Dio Disciples for a version of the 1984 song We Rock at Wacken Open Air, came complete with the singer’s trademark devil horns, and is part of a collaboration between Dio’s widow Wendy Dio and the company Eyellusion.
A full-blown Dio hologram tour is already in the pipeline, with Eyellusion CEO Jeff Pezzuti reportedly hoping to create 14 song performances for the hologram so that a possible 2017 tour with the hologram could feature a rotating setlist.
Pezzuti has also suggested that he’s been working with the idea of making a hologram for late Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, which, like Dio’s hologram, would definitely be a strange sight to behold.
Dio, who is often credited with popularising the ‘metal horns’ hand gesture, died of metastasized stomach cancer in May 2010, aged 67. Catch video of his hologram in action at Wacken Open Air below, and Dio Disciples’ full set over on the Arte website.
