Gurrumul Announces ‘The Gospel Songs’ National Tour

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu will release his third studio album, The Gospel Album, this July, and has announced a national tour in support of the release. He’ll be heading out across the country this July and August.

Gurrumul’s six-date The Gospel Songs Tour will begin in Sydney on 29th July, just two days before The Gospel Album arrives on 31st July. The tour will see the Indigenous Australian musician accompanied by an orchestra and local choirs, and will also include dates in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, and Perth.

Gurrumul’s The Gospel Album is a dedication to the musician’s mother and aunts, who sung songs and lullabies from the church at Elcho Island throughout his childhood. The record captures the influence gospel music has had on Gurrumul, as well as the spiritual songs of north-east Arnhem Land.

The Gospel Album has been produced by longtime collaborator Michael Hohnen, who says the record shows another side of Gurrumul.

“We entered the studios not knowing what would come out, but we did know that inside Gurrumul’s mind and memory was a body of work that had never been revealed before to mainstream audiences,” Hohnen says.

“The studio sessions were musical, improvisational and pure in their exploration of creating music, rather than recording in a predetermined way. Outcomes were unknown until we recorded them!”

Gurrumul, who recently won support from mega-producer Quincy Jones, released his previous album, Rrakala, in 2011. Catch his upcoming tour dates alongside The Gospel Album‘s track listing and cover art, below.
