In Hearts Wake Part Ways With Drummer Caleb Burton

Byron Bay post-hardcore outfit In Hearts Wake have announced they will be parting ways with their “long time drummer, friend and brother” Caleb Burton.

“Caleb’s departure is for personal reasons and as a result he will be unable to partake in our very busy international touring schedule,” the band wrote in a statement. “We all remain close and want to thank Caleb for everything he has brought to the band and wish him all the best for the future.”

“I never thought when I first joined In Hearts Wake I would be able to fulfil a dream of travelling around this country and the world playing music,” added Burton. “Being a part of In Hearts Wake has been an incredibly fun journey and made me the person I am today.

“I love music and the friends I’ve made all around the world from deciding to annoy my mum by taking up drums at 10 years old.”

A fill-in drummer has already been taking Burton’s place behind the kit on the band’s current US tour. They have not confirmed who this is or if they will continue to play with the band on their upcoming Australian tour dates.

While In Hearts Wake didn’t elaborate on the reason for Caleb Burton’s departure, it is likely due to issues with visas. According to a recent Reddit AMA with Northlane, Burton didn’t actually track the drums on the band’s last record, which was recorded in the US. Producer Josh Schroeder confirmed on Reddit that US visa issues led to Northlane’s drummer Nic Pettersen playing on the record instead.

It’s unclear whether he was referring to the band’s forthcoming record Skydancer or their previous one Earthwalker, or both even, as they were reportedly recorded at the same time.

In Hearts Wake are scheduled to play nine Australian dates, including a bunch of all-ages shows, in late May and June this year. They’ll be touring their forthcoming full-length, Skydancer, which is actually is the second half of a project which also spawned their debut album Earthwalker.

Both Skydancer and Earthwalker share themes reflected across their artwork and lyrics. Skydancer is due out on May 1st.
