J-Pop Star Stabbed Repeatedly By Fan Before Gig

J-Pop star Mayu Tomita has been stabbed more than 20 times by a fan before one of her concerts.

As The Guardian reports, Tomita was due to go onstage in Tokyo when she was stabbed in the neck, chest, arms and back by a fan who was upset that his gift to her had been returned. She is now in a critical condition and has not regained consciousness since the attack.

27 year-old Tomohiro Iwazaki was arrested by police following the attack and reportedly told investigators, “I sent her a gift, but it was returned.”

“I asked her why, but she gave an evasive answer, so I became mad and stabbed her numerous times.”

Eye witnesses claim that the man stabbed her with a pocket knife. Police later retrieved a knife from the scene of the crime.

Tomita is a 20 year-old university student who has launched a successful career as a singer and actress. Earlier this month she made complaints to police about an online stalker, however, she was unable to provide them with a name or address. Police did not report it to the stalker unit because they did not believe an assault was imminent. It is still unknown whether the stalker was Iwazaki.

According to Japan Times, the stalker wrote to Tomita in February saying, “I will never forget that I was looked down upon by you.”

“It would be radical to kill just because (someone was) rejected by a girl,” they sent under a month later.
