Kanye West Makes Surprisingly Coherent Appearance On Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Kanye West made his highly anticipated appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, clearing the air with show host and acquaintance Jimmy Kimmel. While the public expected high tension and an irate West lambasting Kimmel, the interview was surprisingly kind-spirited.

The two had previously quibbled after West took offence to a sketch in which Kimmel replaced West and BBC personality Zane Lowe with child actors, having them recite lines from a recent West interview verbatim. West responded with an angry phone call followed by an incensed Twitter rant.

West and Kimmel were acquaintances prior to the feud, with West having flown last-minute to attend the wedding of Kimmel’s friend, even taking photos with members of Kimmel’s family. West explained that his familiarity with Kimmel partly led to the attacks being launched at him.

“When I saw the skit…I said, well I know you,” West said. “So a combination of me knowing you, but also me not knowing the person who put a bad headline on the cover of In Touch…I was like, well this is the one person I know. So I can go and let out everything that I feel.”

When Kimmel first announced news of the rapper/producer’s appearance on his show, taking to his official Facebook page, he assured fans that the entire feud had not been a publicity stunt or a set-up machinated for comedic effect.

“I’ve never done a publicity stunt in my life,” said West. “Any time I went up and spoke my mind, whether it put my career in jeopardy or whatever, it’s always what I thought was the truth…I don’t follow the rules of normal celebrities…I don’t do publicity stunts. Period.”

“I’m not running for office,” he continued. “I’m just here to make good music, make people feel good when they hear my music.” West elaborated further on his view of the media, saying “I feel like the media do everything they can to break creatives…and I do everything I can to break media.”

Kimmel took the opportunity to describe his respect for West and his appreciation of his kind nature, telling West “I don’t know if you know this, a lot of people think you’re a jerk,” but then recounting the story of West’s appearance at his friend’s wedding and his kindness towards his family.

Said Kimmel: “I often in my own personal conversations say ‘No, I know this guy. He is not a jerk’…to go to a wedding of a friend of mine, I think you took a Southwest Airlines flight out to that wedding just to make it for this guy who was just a co-worker…that to me tells me a lot about you.”

Kimmel explained that while most celebrities treat him with respect and kindness because of his status and his access to a television show, he appreciates how they treat his friends, family members and members of the general public more than himself.

Though the interview was not bereft of trademark West hubris, with the Good Life rapper declaring I’m a creative genius and there’s no other way to word it. I know you’re not supposed to say that about yourself…I say things the wrong way a lot of times, but my intention is always positive.”
