Koolism And Dereb The Ambassador Hit The Upstairs Beresford This Weekend

Written by Kate Wolf on August 3, 2011

The Sydney winter chill seems to be easing up this week and it’s just in time for another cracking weekend of live music from The Upstairs Beresford.

As always, it’s free entry before 8pm and only $15 afterward, and what you get in return for your spare change is the creme de la creme of live music in one of Sydney’s premier venues.

This Friday night you can catch one of Ethiopia’s most respected singers, Dereb Desalegn, with his new project Dereb The Ambassador. Born in a mud hut in the north of Ethiopia into a family of musicians, Dereb’s destiny was sealed when as a 4 year old he first performed publicly with his family. His vocal talent was evident and, with his parent mentors by his side, he went from strength to strength, finally adding a Masenko, an Ethiopian violin, to his repertoire at the age of 10. By the time he was 16, he was drawing crowds in the bars of Addis Ababa and around Ethiopia as both a solo artist and with other Ethiopian musicians.

Since moving to Australia, Dereb has been performing extensively with his group Lion Of Judah and will now be bringing his exciting new group Dereb The Ambassador to the Upstairs Beresford.

On Saturday night Upstairs Beresford presents one of Australia’s most versatile and respected MCs, Koolism with supports by local up & comers Smoke And Silver. Last year Koolism released their fifth studio LP, The ‘Umu – a Tongan word for an underground oven. Always trying to push their sound into new and unchartered territory, Danielsan incorporated his newly honed skills with instruments such as the bass guitar, synthesizers and drums, across analogue and digital formats.

Hau once again proves why he is highly regarded as one of the country’s sharpest and versatile MCs, covering topics of racism and religion in a range of styles and flows. After 18 years of releases and tours, there is no question that Koolism still sound as fresh as a South Pacific island sea breeze and is sure to make you feel the good summer vibes that are just around the corner!
