Laneway Festival Will Be Tame Impala’s Last Shows For A While

Written by Sam Murphy on November 21, 2016

Tame Impala have been a whirlwind for well over a year off the back of the release of Currents but it’s all coming to an end very soon.

Speaking to Kiwi site Noted frontman Kevin Parker revealed that Laneway Festival will be the definitive end of the touring cycle for Currents and will also mark the end of touring for the band for a while.

“I really don’t know how that’s going to feel because in the past, the album cycles haven’t really ended with a bang, or even ended decidedly. They just sort of peter out. But this time it really is a bookend,” he said.

“I’m glad it’s happening at Laneway. There will be tears and cheers, and emotions will be running high. I think it’ll be quite weird, but not without a sense of accomplishment.”

Tame Impala first played Laneway Festival back in 2009, where they had to start playing before the gates had even opened. A lot has changed since then. Their second album Lonerism catapulted them to the international stage and Currents made them one of the biggest bands in the world.

This may be the last we hear of Tame Impala for some time but it probably won’t be the last we hear of Kevin Parker. He’s reportedly working on a number of other projects, teasing even more Lady Gaga-like collaborations.

Gaga was Parker’s first foray into the pop production world, as he jumped in the studio with Mark Ronson, Bloodpop and the popstar herself to write Perfect Illusion.

“I’m not sure if you can immediately pick [this] in the song, but if you imagine Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks singing Perfect Illusion at the same time, I think you can kind of imagine it as a Fleetwood Mac song – with a Gaga stamp, of course,” he told Noted about the song.

Tame Impala kick off Laneway Festival in late January alongside Nick Murphy, Glass Animals, Clams Casino and more.
