Legendary Beatles Producer Sir George Martin Has Died

Some very sad news for lovers of The Beatles today, with reports their legendary producer Sir George Martin has passed away at the age of 90.

Ringo Starr reported the sad news of Martin’s passing on Twitter today, writing: “God bless George Martin peace and love to Judy and his family… George will be missed xxx” and adding “Thank you for all your love and kindness George peace and love xx”.

As fans of the Fab Four will know very well, Martin, who was often referred to endearingly as “The Fifth Beatle”, was instrumental in the iconic group’s success.

Not only did he give The Beatles their first ever recording contract in the early sixties, he produced pretty much all of their music (aside from Phil Spector’s controversial work on Let It Be ), and was therefore instrumental in the way their trailblazing sound evolved across the sixties.

Tributes have already started to flow in across cyberspace for the Grammy winning musical legend, including from John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s son Sean, who wrote: “R.I.P. George Martin. I’m so gutted I don’t have many words.”

Sir George’s cause of death has not yet been revealed, but at the age of 90, he had a good innings, achieved many amazing things and arguably helped change the face of popular music forever (The Beatles have influenced everyone from Black Sabbath to Justin Bieber), which is no mean feat.

RIP to a true legend.
