Legendary Sitar Player Ravi Shankar Passes Away

Although a sitar may not be the instrument you are most familiar with, you cannot go past the influence that iconic sitar player Ravi Shankar has had on the modern music world. Famed for his efforts in the famous ‘Concert for Bangladesh’ Ravi brought Indian music to the western world, inspiring many musicians, who would go on to use sitars in their music.

Our own Jinja Safari have listed the master as a key influence in their songwriting. After befriending George Harrison in the 60s, Shankar played at Woodstock as well as at the aforementioned Concert for Bangladesh. Despite his ripe old age of 92, Shankar continued to play, and last week received a nomination for the 2013 Grammy Awards, something which many hope will turn into a posthumous award.
