Leonard Cohen’s Son Pens Tribute To His Father, Following Private Funeral

UPDATE 17/11/16: Leonard Cohen’s cause of death has been revealed by his manager.

ORIGINAL STORY: Leonard Cohen‘s son Adam Cohen has spoken out days after the announcement of his father’s death, penning a brief yet evocative tribute to his father and thanking the world for the outpouring of sympathy and love.

After burying his father in a private Montreal ceremony, with just close family and friends present, Adam Cohen – himself a musician – took to Facebook to share the tribute, reflecting on Leonard Cohen’s legacy as both an artist and a parent.

“My sister and I just buried my father in Montreal,” begins the note. “With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he’d asked.

“As I write this I’m thinking of my father’s unique blend of self-deprecation and dignity, his approachable elegance, his charisma without audacity, his old-world gentlemanliness and the hand-forged tower of his work.

“There’s so much I wish I could thank him for, just one last time,” he continues. “I’d thank him for the comfort he always provided, for the wisdom he dispensed, for the marathon conversations, for his dazzling wit and humor. I’d thank him for giving me, and teaching me to love Montreal and Greece. And I’d thank him for music; first for his music which seduced me as a boy, then for his encouragement of my own music, and finally for the privilege of being able to make music with him.”

Leonard Cohen died at his home in Los Angeles on Monday at the age of 82. When the news of his death was announced late last week, tributes flew in from all over the music and artistic community.

Leonard Cohen’s final album, 2016’s You Want It Darker, was released just weeks before his death.
