Listen: Smash Mouth New Song ‘Magic’

Written by Mike Hohnen on August 1, 2012

Just as it starts to seem as though this 90s comeback thing had run its course, it’s beginning to look like it’s only just begun. Smash Mouth have announced they will be heading Down Under for a run of shows, and today we have the first glimpse into their up-and-coming album.

Magic will take you straight back to 1996, invoking mental images of bright shirts, fedoras, wearing sunnies in video clips, and when it was acceptable for dudes to bleach their tips. The band has stayed true to their ‘kind of punk’ ‘kind of ska’ flavour and bizarrely haven’t aged a bit. Back in the day, the band experienced heights that few of their peers reached, pulling names like Ben Stiller, a young Dane Cook and William H. Macy for the clips and landed a very well-known sync with Shrek with I’m A Believer, and landed on the sountrack of basically every single high school coming-of-age comedy.

The lineup changed and the releases continued, though the band met a similar fate to most 90’s bands, crushed by the rise of boy bands and 00’s R&B, only to return again 15 years later when the royalty cheques stopped flowing. You can check out the single below as well as the tour dates; stay tuned for more info on the release.
