Lou Bega, the German musician who did the ’90s version of going viral with his annoyingly catchy smash Mambo No 5 back in 1999 has received a flood of condolences from fans after being confused with legendary musician Lou Reed, who passed away this week.
The mix-up started when an un-named journalist cited that it was Mr Bega rather than Mr Reed who’d lost his battle with liver disease, forcing the still-living one hit wonder to take to Facebook (along with a little bit of Monica, Erica, Rita and Tina) to set the record straight and send his own condolences to the great Velvet Underground frontman:
“RIP Lou Reed the Genius who took Walks on the Wild side. PS. I have been receiving Tons of condolences because of a Journalist confusing our Identities. Lou Bega sends his condolences to mr.Reeds Family.”
Bega accompanied the post with a selfie, the modern day mark of respect. However, there’s no evidence of the original journalistic mix up, and Mr Bega conveniently has a new single out now. Please excuse our skepticism.
Despite this, there are tons of “RIP Lou Bega” status updates floating around, presumably from those just realising that Bega was, in fact, still alive before they heard about his death. Check them out below.
