M.I.A. Documentary Director Leaks Trailer, “Would Rather Die” Than Complete It

British director Steve Loveridge “would rather die” than complete his unfinished documentary about M.I.A., with the film-maker leaking the trailer via his blog and then giving the proverbial finger to the electro artist and the entertainment company behind the doco, Roc Nation.

The trio, along with M.I.A.’s record label Interscope, have been working on the film for the past year, but Loveridge has been expressing frustrations with the stop-start nature of the project online for some time now, posting “I get an email every few weeks from Roc Nation or Interscope saying it’s all going to start up again, but then nothing,” on his Tumblr account.

Loveridge yesterday uploaded the trailer for the doco to said Tumblr account, evoking the ire of Roc Nation, who emailed Loveridge saying the unsolicited release “screws with everything we’ve been working on”. Loveridge replied, “I really couldn’t give a flying fuck. Count me out. Would rather die than work on this… nothing personal :)” Indeed.

M.I.A. took to Twitter to express her disappointment with the dead-in-the-water doco, saying “I’m gonna need @kickstarter and my fans to help make this exist, I’ve been black listed through normal channels !!!!!!!”

The Paper Planes rapper is expected to release her fourth studio album Matangi later this year, with lead single Bring The Noize released last month.
