Maternal Tribute Album On The Way

Written by Barnaby Smith on March 30, 2011

Some of Australia’s most prominent talents are joining for forces for what promises to be an excruciatingly sentimental tribute album – a compilation devoted to mothers, mothering and matriarchs.

Triple J has the details on the album, which will feature the likes of Julia Stone, Paul Kelly, Gin Wigmore, Gurrumul, Washington, Oh Mercy and the John Butler Trio. The LP is called When I First Met Your Ma, named after the Paul Kelly song, and is out on April 22.

The record is made up of songs written especially for the project as well as cover versions. New songs come from Washington with Lightwell and Oh Mercy with With You, while there are covers of songs by The Beatles, Paul Simon and Fleetwood Mac.

While we’re on the subject of lullabies, snuggles and nice things, here is a lovely version of Hushabye Mountain from Mary Poppins, as performed by Pink Floyd‘s Dave Gilmour, below.
