Maynard James Keenan Clarifies Comments About Tool Fans Being ‘Insufferable Retards’

If you’re a Tool fan and were offended by the band’s vocalist Maynard James Keenan calling you “insufferable retards” then you can breathe a sigh of relief because he didn’t mean you in particular.

That is unless you’re a fanatic. He took to Twitter to explain the comments saying that he was only talking about “fanatics.”

“Our core fanbase aren’t fanatics,” he wrote.

“They’re music lovers & artists & good people. Its the fanatics that are insufferable.”

In a recent interview with the Phoenix New Times, when asked about if there was inherent humour in Tool’s music, Keenan said, “Yeah, it’s there, but people miss it because they’re so focused on the other bullshit.”

“It’s lost,” he added. “Insufferable people … It’s just ridiculous, retards. I’m sorry. Can’t help them. Way too serious. Too much. Lighten up.”

When somebody on Twitter subsequently asked him whether he stands by those comments that Tool fans are “insufferable retards” he simply replied with, “context”. He further retweeted a fan that said, “Tool fans are way too serious? I can’t go a day without drawing a dick on something.”

Tool unveiled their last album 10,000 Days in 2006 and have yet to release a follow up thanks to a myriad of legal dramas that now hopefully seem to have come to an end. This weekend, members of Tool are getting together for their first and only performance of 2015 as headliners of Arizona’s Monster Mash Music Festival.
