Meat Puppets To Headline CherryRock014, Coming To Sydney

The management of Melbourne rock and roll spot Cherry Bar, have taken to their official Facebook page on the eve of their inaugural Cherry Awards to announce alt-rock legends the Meat Puppets as the headlining act for their CherryRock014 festival event, to take place in Melbourne and Sydney.

“I’m too excited. I have to share this with the Cherry Massive on the day of our Cherry Awards,” opens a missive posted to Cherry Bar’s social media centre. “CherryRock014 will take place on 25 May in Melbourne and for the first time Sydney. We have finally 100% confirmed our headline act.”

CherryRock014 will be the Meat Puppets’ first Australian show in over 20 years. The Arizona trio, made up of brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood and drummer Derrick Bostrom, will make their very first appearance at CherryRock014 in AC/DC Lane, Melbourne on Sunday, 25th May.

According to the Facebook dispatch, the Melbourne show will be taking place “the week before residents move into 108 Flinders Street,” unfortunately prompting management to add, “This could be the last time, maybe the last time, I don’t know.”

Meat Puppets are best known for their appearance during Nirvana‘s famous MTV Unplugged set, during which they played three songs from their 1983 SST Records sophomore album Meat Puppets IIPlateau, Oh, Me, and Lake of Fire — with Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain on vocals.

Tickets go on sale in January and will be accompanied by the announcement of the rest of the CherryRock014 lineup. Past lineups have included the likes of Barbarion, Drunk Mums, King Parrot, and Gay Paris. You can view the full statement from Cherry Bar, below.

Cherry Bar’s CherryRock014 Headliner Announcement

I’m too excited. I have to share this with the Cherry Massive on the day of our Cherry Awards…

CherryRock014 will take place on 25 May in Melbourne and for the first time Sydney.

We have finally 100% confirmed our headline act. I wanted you to be the first to know.

Headlining our street rock n roll festival… the band that massively influenced Nirvana, Pavement, Soundgarden and Dinosaur Jr…..CHERRYROCK014 gives you:

THE MEAT PUPPETS!!

First show in over 20 years in Australia, and that first show will be at CherryRock014 in AC/DC Lane on Sunday 25 May (the week before residents move into 108 Flinders Street). This could be the last time, maybe the last time, I don’t know…

Originally from Phoenix Arizona the Kirkwood Brothers were made famous when just 138 days before his tragic death in 1993 Kurt Cobain invited them to perform with him on MTV Unplugged and Nirvana covered three classic Meat Puppets’ songs, ‘Plateau’, ‘Oh Me’ and ‘Lake of Fire’.

“Where do bad folks go when they die

They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly

Go to a lake of fire and fry

See them again ’till the Fourth of July

I knew a lady who came from Duluth

Bitten by a dog with a rabid tooth

She went to her grave just a little too soon

flew away howling on the yellow moon

Where do bad folks go when they die

They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly

Go to a lake of fire and fry

See them again ’till the Fourth of July

People cry and people moan

Look for a dry place to call their home

Try to find some place to rest their bones

Of an angels and the devils try to make ’em their own

Where do bad folks go when they die

They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly

Go to a lake of fire and fry

See them again ’till the Fourth of July.”

One of the more notable groups on the roster of SST Records (who released most of their albums), the Meat Puppets started as a punk rock band, but like most of their SST peers, the Meat Puppets established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock, punctuated with Curt Kirkwood’s unique vocals.

So, who wants to see The Meat Puppets in AC/DC Lane at CherryRock014 on Sunday 25 May 2014?

Tickets on sale in January when we announce the rest of our most amazing line-up ever!
