MGMT Unveil Trailer For Upcoming Self-Titled Album

Psychedelia-peddlers MGMT have released a bizarre new trailer for their upcoming third studio effort. The video, which readers can check out below, features exotic locales, international intrigue, science fiction and some tongue-in-cheek stabs at the NSA’s integrity.

The band had previously stated that their third studio effort would be inspired by avant-garde electronic artist Aphex Twin and it seems they’ve taken the inspiration to their promo material as well, with the video possessing a strong Chris Cunningham vibe.

The video features the band as targets of an intergalactic espionage agenda and features short clips of some of the tracks from the self-titled record, which is slated for an Australian release of Friday, 13th September, including singles Cool Song No. 2 and Your Life is a Lie.

The new album was recorded at New York’s Tarbox Road Studios and mixed and produced by long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann, who also worked on the band’s 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular and the 2010 follow-up Congratulations. The band told Rolling Stone that third LP would be a more experimental effort.

The band are set to head Down Under to play Southbound Festival 2014 along with Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, The Cat Empire and more.
