Michelle Shocked Unleashes Anti-Gay Rant At San Fran Crowd – Sincere Or Stunt?

Michelle Shocked has caused quite the commotion by condemning same-sex marriage during a recent show in San Francisco, but the reportedly bisexual, previously left-wing singer may be pulling some kind of publicity stunt.

According to The Guardian, while onstage at Yoshi’s, Shocked went as so far as to say that when same-sex marriage is legalised it will be the “downfall of civilisation” and will herald the return of Jesus before labelling homosexuals as ‘faggots’:

“When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back. You are going to leave here and tell people, ‘Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots.'”

The tirade caused a walk-out of patrons, and even though the venue tried to shut the show down, Shocked continued to play until the power was pulled. Now, as observed by Billboard, the anti same-sex marriage rant has led 10 of 11 remaining venues on Shocked’s current US tour to cancel upcoming shows with the once-revered supporter of gay rights.

Shocked has been a born-again Christian for approximately 2 decades but, even after converting, still reportedly championed gay rights. The 51-year-old singer rose to prominence during the late ’80s and early ’90s and was praised by fans for being a supporter of liberal causes.

It’s this reputation that makes it hard to believe Shocked was genuine during her recent onstage outburst. Although Shocked hasn’t given a definite statement on the matter, the singer’s Twitter account has been retweeting comments from those who believe the anti-gay comments were sincere and those who think it was sarcasm.

All should be revealed this Friday, when Michelle is scheduled to appear on Radio Or Not to answer questions about her tirade from long-time acquaintance Nicole Sandler.
