Music Feeds Podcast Episode #112: The Wonder Years

Fans of Philadelphia pop-punk band The Wonder Years have had an emotional few months, with the band announcing then cancelling an Australian tour only to subsequently be absorbed into the Soundwave 2015 Festival lineup. According to frontman Dan Campbell it was an emotional experience for them too.

“I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus, because I’m sure there were a lot of extenuating circumstances, but I’ll say at the very least that people didn’t live up to the promises that were made to us,” he explains.

“We were in a situation where we were going to fly to literally the furthest place on the planet from our home without a lot of things in place and if everything went wrong, literally, we wouldn’t have been able to afford to come home.”

Luckily just days later at the UK Reading Festival AJ Maddah saved the day and found them a place on the Soudnwave 2015 bill. Now the boys are back on the road in the US and will take a little time to write some new material before heading to Australia in the new year. Campbell says the set-list will be packed with tunes from their previous two records, not new tracks.

“We generally make it a point to not play songs before they’re recorded. When I was 17 or 18 years old I fucking hated it when bands would do that. I was like, ‘OK, you’re playing this festival. You only get to play like nine songs and you decided that one of those nine songs was one I’ve never fucking heard before? Fuck you’.”

“We haven’t played any songs from The Greatest Generation in Australia yet. So I think it would be shitty for us to be like, ‘Hey you know that record we put out that you like? We’re not going to play songs from that. We’re going to play shit you’ve never heard’.”
