Musicians Who Can Teach Us How To Keep The Band Together

Jerk Move: Continuing to use the same band name after a pivotal member leaves.

Case in point: Stone Temple Pilots. The ’90s alt rockers kicked singer Scott Weiland out of the band, replaced him with Linkin Park‘s Chester Bennington and then sued him to stop him from playing their songs. Weiland counter-sued with the bizarre claim that he’s still in the band and that the other members can’t use the name Stone Temple Pilots without him. It’s messy, and rather unseemly.

The right way: The Jam. When frontman Paul Weller decided to disband the group at the height of their career in 1982, the other members weren’t happy about it but decided to call it a day rather than replace their frontman. As a result, they’re perhaps not as well-known as they could have been.

But you know what they do have? Credibility. You hear that, INXS?
