“DIY” is an aesthetic many aspire to – in any part of life – but rarely achieve. We always need that extra help, that confident opinion or rational advice to get through to the next phase. The ones who truly live by DIY – those who need no help or encouragement, yet achieve great things – are aspired and revered.

Sydney band Parades have, in a short existence, created an envious world of autonomy, creating lush soundscapes and soaring melodies, all while tucked away in their private studio in Sydney’s north-west. Their debut EP, set for release this winter, was made entirely at the band’s own pace, every note recorded and self produced in-house. The DIY approach has done them amazing feats thus far; their 2008 demo receiving lauds and accolades, with high rotation on Sydney’s FBi and Melbourne’s RRR, and praise from, JJJ’s Richard Kingsmill – the king of critics.

The band has played with the likes of Jebediah, Malcom Middleton (their third gig) and at Peats Ridge festival, all within 6 months from the womb. Their track Dead Nationale has received rotation on JJJ and a massive amount of attention from both the blogosphere and critics alike. As the first taste of the bands’ new material, it’s become a more expansive and epic coming-of-age from their earlier work. For the gang who met at school, now comes time to unleash their newest single Hunters, form the forthcoming EP.

Many bands fashionably tread the DIY route but few ever pull it off lightly, with the majority falling through the cracks of bad production and worse song writing. Parades manage to carry both in droves; a complete triple-threat of amazing songs, live chops and production prowess that belies their years.

Parades launch the single Hunters at The Hopetoun on May 9, with support from Yen and Made In Japan.
