PREMIERE: Gypsy & The Cat Explore Japan In ‘I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else’ Video

Showing the kind of longevity not too common in the local indie-electro scene of late, Melbourne stalwart duo Gypsy & The Cat continue to show no signs of slowing down, with 2016 in particular set to be a bumper year of releases, one of which is latest single I Just Wanna Be Somebody Else, the shiny new video of which, Music Feeds is thrilled to premiere for you today.

The first single off their upcoming LP Virtual Islands, due out August, the new track shimmers with the pair’s characteristic rising and falling synths, but towed along by an undercurrent of something much denser.

The video, premiering below, was shot in Japan and features artist Housetu Sato’s famous woollen cat head. Talking to Music Feeds, Xavier Bacash from the band tells us: ‘”the video concept was created by our director and friend Thom Lawrence, who was ultimately conducted by the song itself. The video highlights escapism in all of our quotidian days. We all at some point want someone else’s car or house or hair or job or life; it’s a very normal mental process in the everyday.

“Thom and our cameraman, Charles Lanceplaine, gracefully captured this feeling. It all starts at Lotte Kasai driving range just outside Tokyo with the cat head man becoming the central protagonist. At the golf range, we felt it was important to show how people are so close to each other and out for the same thing, but at the same time they are like islands that won’t ever touch or speak. I’d like to thank the people of Tokyo for having us and being a part of the songs story.”

Go ahead and escape your quotidian day (don’t worry, I had to Google it as well) by hitting play on the brand spanker below, and stay tuned for more new G&tC, leading up to the album release this August!
