From the ashes of one of Australia’s most prevalent alt-rock outfits of the 2000s, Motor Ace, comes the proverbial phoenix, Nighthawk. In the lead up to their debut full-length offering, Nighthawk have given us a solid idea of what we can expect, with the brand new single and video for Surely Gettin On.
The track is a soaring affair that appears to have swooped down all the way from the stratosphere, perching atop your speakers with the kind of gusto you’d expect from an ’80s power business broker. Powered by a huge chorus, book-ended by high-voltage verses, Surely Gettin On is surely going to be a good time for all.
Founding member Patrick Robertson has a lot to say of the motive behind the track, explaining, “The fire that compelled me to make music in the first place was extinguished by the end of Motor Ace. I was young and took every kink in the road harder than I should have. I do have some regrets about not enjoying the great music we made and our success a little more.
“Nighthawk comes from a very different place. It was a party before it was a band. There’s a simplicity about the music and the attitude. I haven’t felt as excited about a group of musicians and making music for a very long time. I think you can hear it.”
For the video, the band kept things simple, reducing the clip to a simple performance draped in a fiery red, which perfectly marries the aforementioned concept.
